Palo Santo Cleansing Stick   

Palo santo translates to “holy wood” in Spanish. This sweet, fragrant tree from South America belongs to the citrus family and was used by the Incas, shamans and medicine people for energy clearing, healing and spiritual cleansing.

Originally hailing from the coast of South America, Palo Santo has other mystical relatives such as Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal. It’s considered a deeply sacred and spiritual tree which possesses a cleansing energy and healing properties similar to Sage and Cedar. However, Palo Santo is actually part of the citrus family and has the sweet smell of pine, mint, and lemon.

When should I use Palo Santo?

To promote healing on all levels. Traditionally, palo santo has been used for various ailments, such as the common cold, flu-like symptoms, stress, asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression and inflammation. For daily smudging. 4. As you take the Palo Santo stick into the corners of each room or space you are cleansing, say aloud: “I ask that the plant spirit of Palo Santo please infuse this space with blessings”. 
5. A rich smell will fill the air, bringing peace and clarity to the moment.
6. Once you feel you have cleansed your space, place the Palo Santo stick in a fireproof bowl and allow the embers to burn out.
7. Remember to always exercise care and caution when working with fire. 
8. The Palo Santo Stick should last you several weeks-months; depending on your space and how many times per day you use it. 

Cleansing Crystals with Palo Santo

1. Place your crystals together in an area.
2. Light the Palo Santo stick, allow it to burn for up to a minute then blow it out.
3. Allow the smoke from the stick to connect with the the crystals by place next to or waving the smoke around each crystal, whatever feels right for you. 
4. Once the stick has burnt out, your crystals will be cleansed and you can start afresh with new intentions.

White Sage Wand  

Sage originates from the Latin word salvia, derivative of salvere, a Latin verb meaning “to feel well and healthy or to heal.” Since prehistoric times, generations of indigenous communities in North America have smudged with what is now known as California white sage in ritual, ceremony and prayer for grounding, protection and peace. 

When should I use sage?

For deeper energy clearings. When you need to shield yourself from relentless negative vibrations or to ward off  unwanted spirits and energies from your home, white sage is your go-to. Its potent cleansing and antiseptic properties are excellent for restoring alignment, tranquility and stability.

When settling into a new place. Beginning a new chapter in a different environment requires a special kind of clearing to set things off right. So, it’s best to start fresh with a vigorous smudge in your new space using white sage. After experiencing trauma or radical change or when working to manifest a major transformation. The same can be said after undergoing a drastic change or when you’re in the midst of manifesting a significant transformation, such as a move, starting a new job, graduation, marriage, major weight loss, a breakup or divorce.

White Sage Smudging Process 

1. Use loose dried white sage or a white ceremonial sage bundle (aka wand), 

2. Next, place it on any heat-proof burning surface like an Abolone Shell — a traditional vessel used as it represents the element of water. Light the bundle by holding a flame to it until it begins to smoke. If a true flame appears, shake the bundle gently or blow until it is just embers and smoke. 

3. Once you have a nice smoke going, use you hand or a feather to direct the smoke over your body from your feet up to your head, then back down again. As you do this, visualize the smoke taking away with it any negative energy from your life, any darkness or malady.

If you feel comfortable with this incantation, repeat the following:

“Air, fire, water, earth. Cleanse, dismiss, dispel.”

Once you have smudged your body, begin to move through your space. Wave the smoke into all corners, across doorways and into shadow spaces. To maintain the atmosphere of ritual, keep repeating the incantation in your mind as you diffuse the smoke.

Once the space is cleared, allow the sage bundle to either burn out or gently press it out in your heat-proof shell or container. You can even bury the remaining smudge in your garden to really feel the completeness of the cleansing ritual. Once buried, the sage has done its work in completing the elemental cycle. Ideally, you should try to use a new smudge for each cleansing.
